Co-Founder and CSO

Dr. Jocelyn Wessels is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Afynia. An academic scientist turned entrepreneur, Jocelyn has always had an interest in women’s health and a focus on developing innovations that make a positive difference in people’s lives.

During her time in academia Jocelyn focused on finding non-invasive biomarkers of endometriosis. This work, and her passion for changing a stagnant landscape, led Jocelyn to co-found Afynia. Afynia has created a blood test for endometriosis, a chronic condition affecting 1 in 10 women, that currently takes an average of 10 years to diagnose using traditional means. The company’s flagship product can significantly shorten the diagnostic journey.

Jocelyn holds a BSc and MSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Medical Sciences from McMaster University. She has completed two Postdoctoral Fellowships, written over 35 scientific manuscripts and won several awards including the CIHR Vanier Scholarship, the CIHR Fellowship Award, Ontario Women’s Health Scholar award, and the YMCA Women of Distinction award in STEM.
